It is true that vinyl manufacturing can take a little bit of time. And that is actually one of the biggest reasons we’re partnering with as many pressing plants as we can. The production process is more-or-less dependant on the size of the plant and on the unit quantities, so we try to shop around as much as possible for the best deal.
Hailing from Peru, Lara Nuh is known for mixing Afro-Peruvian rhythms, traditional flute sounds, with house beats. Her first single, “Rumba De Muerte,” is a deep house jam perfect for that late summer celebrity-tinged pool party you’ve definitely never been to. The use of traditional chants as a rhythmic element is especially tasty, I find. I especially love her Sofar performance in Lima. I feel that her ability to move between different elements, while keeping this sense of traditional Peruvian music flowing through everything she’s doing, is really excellent.

Rock ‘n’ roll is a wide genre of music that incorporates a ton of different sound imprints. My advice may seem a bit broad, but ultimately you’re always free to try things and see what works for you! Let’s just say, in terms of the sound you’re going for, you’re playing in a band that does classic covers and original songs in the same set. If you’re playing some classic guitar lines, perhaps switching between rhythm and lead guitar, you need an amp that can handle those differences with an all-around good tone.
Tone and slap sounds are both produced by striking the drum closer to its edge where there’s more tension in the skin than in the middle. It is actually the contact area of the fingers that determines the pitch of the strike.

So far, we’ve kept to pretty mainstream pop tunes, but when we start to move away from those, things can get murky pretty quickly. For instance, while verses and choruses might be easy to recognize in a big pop anthem, how they function in an electronic dance song might not be as clear. Or how would you describe the form of something like “A Day in the Life” by The Beatles? It’s basically two entirely separate songs smashed together, so there’s no obvious “verse” or “chorus” section. Same thing with Travis Scott’s “Sicko Mode,” but for three songs’ worth!
Pre- and post-choruses were a little less aggressive this year, even while variations on these chorus-abutting sections saw an increase. Interestingly, only “The Middle” dispensed with any intro material this year, and only Eminem’s “Killshot” got into the Top 5 without any chorus or refrain material, but I mean, he did say right at the start of the song that he wasn’t gonna repeat himself, so there you have it. (And yes, I said “chorus-abutting sections” back there, and yes, I had Morgan Freeman’s voice in my head when I said it … “chorus-abutting sections.“)
When I was 17, I wrote down my DJ goals on a piece of paper. I wanted to play at “Space” or “Pacha” Ibiza. I never got to play Space, but I did become a resident DJ at Pacha for seven years. My advice: If you believe in yourself and are passionate and genuine, you will achieve everything you want.
I do give students my opinions on their music, during our in-class, art-school-style critique sessions (and sometimes also as timed SoundCloud comments.) I consider this subjective group critique to be the actually valuable form of feedback. As a group, we listen to each person’s assignment and then talk about it. We try to figure out:
The last important aspect of phase concerns signal processing. And no, I’m not really talking about the guitar pedal effect called “phaser” — if you’re using a lot of plugins, each one that you introduce into your mix will affect the phase. Each instance of digital processing adds latency to the signal, even if only a few hundredths of a second. Many DAWs and plugin manufacturers attempt various compensations for this, but regardless, it’s important to be aware that it’s always going be there, and in some cases, unavoidably so.
The reverse crash cymbal technique is one of the most common impact accentuators. Some producers prefer imitating this sound with automated white noise samples fading in, or a reversed tambourine sample instead of a reversed crash cymbal. Either way, that whooshing sound leading up to the chorus can be so easily overlooked, but it’s one of those sound effects you’d miss if it wasn’t there.
