Frequently Asked Questions

Offsite Backup

What is offsite backup?  Top
Offsite backup is the process of storing copies of your important data in geographically distant locations. Traditional data backup plans protects against software or hardware failure, but leave your data completely vulnerable to physical harm. By creating a secure copy of your data in an offsite location, your data is protected not only from hardware or software malfunction, but is also impervious to physical disaster.
Why do I need offsite Backup?  Top
Offsite backup provides a level of protection for your important data which is unatainable by any other means. If you or your business depend on your data, you simply cannot afford to gamble on anything less.
My existing backup plan seems to work well for me, why should I change it?  Top
If your existing backup plan does not involve an offsite component, it is putting your entire business at risk. If, on the other hand, you have a well designed and implemented backup plan which includes an offsite component, Zettabits will save you valuable time and effort which could be better spent elsewhere. Finally, if you are already using an automatic offsite backup provider, switching to Zettabits will almost certainly save you both time and money.
Is offsite backup secure?  Top
Absolutely. Ensuring the complete confidentiality of your data is as easy as making sure that it is securely encrypted before it ever leavs your network. With Zettabits, we take this an extra step. Not only is your data automatically encrypted with your unique key using AES-256, the current gold standard in data encryption, but access to and transmission of your data is further protected. Your safely encrypted data is safeguarded by an entire extra layer of industry standard secure authentication and transmission protocols, the same as those used by banks and most other offsite backup providers.

Zettabits

How is Zettabits different than other offsite storage providers?  Top
Offsite (and online) storage providers can be found by the dozen, all claiming to be the best and easiest way to store your data. Their offerings generally start in the range of 1 Gigabyte, and come with a software application which will perform the backup task on the computer you install it on. With Zettabits, you get something different, a zBox, your local portal to your Zettabits Data.

While other providers force your computer to perform the arduous task of encryption and offsite data transfer themselves, your zBox automatically does it for you. When other providers offer helpful advice on how to choose which data to leave unprotected, Zettabits starts with 30 Gigabytes of space, providing ample room for all of your critical data. Finally, if you do request an equal amount of storage from another provider, your computer may be occupied for days or weeks while it transfers all of the data to the backup. Transfer of your data to a zBox happens at local network speeds, hundreds or thousands of times faster, leaving your computer free for other tasks.
Don't other offsite storage providers offer local hardware?  Top
Most serious data backup providers include a local staging server, like a zBox, as part of the backup plan. Most also require that their customers either buy the staging hardware upfront, at prices greatly inflated over the cost of hardware, or pay an additional monthly fee for rental of the hardware. With Zettabits, there is no additional fee for your zBox. It is an integral part of the Zettabits service and thus included in our already industry leading low rate.

Additionally, because your zBox is included as a fully integrated piece of the Zettabits service, upgrades and replacements occur at no additional cost to you.

The Backup

What sort of data can I backup with Zettabits?  Top
Zettabits is completely application agnostic, meaning that you can use Zettabits to safely backup any sort of application or other data that you require. If your data is on a zBox, it will be backed up.
How often is my data backed up to off-site locations?  Top
Your data is backed up every hour. Each backup checks for changes that you have made to your data in the last hour. If you have created a new file or deleted an existing file, these changes will be mirrored on the server. If you have modified an existing file, only the changes you have made during the last hour will be uploaded, conserving your bandwidth.
What sort of Internet connection does Zettabits require?  Top
Unlike many software-only backup providers, Zettabits will work with any dedicated Internet connection. Unlike a desktop computer running a data backup application, your zBox is dedicated to the task of ensuring that your backups are always up to date. Because your zBox is hard at work 24-hours a day backing up your data, it is able to get much more out of your Internet connection than a software-only backup system running on a PC.
Will Zettabits make my Internet connection slow?  Top
Not at all. Though it is true that with some Internet connections heavy traffic, such as that caused by securely backing up all of your data, can degrade performance, your zBox gives you the ability to control how much bandwidth it may use. By using the Rate Limiting feature of your zBox, you can limit how much of your connection is available for the backup service, removing any impact the Zettabits service may have on your Inetnet connection.

Security

How secure is a zBox?  Top
The zBox is built upon the same reliable Linux foundation as many frontline web and data servers. Additionally, each zBox is protected by its own internal firewall, and each Professional zBox makes use of the latest in grsecurity patches (http://www.grsecurity.net/). Finally, as part of the Zettabits service, your zBox is in frequent communication with our secure update servers, ensuring that if a problem ever was found with zBox security, you would be updated within minutes.
Other companies claim to use 448-bit encryption, why does Zettabits use only 256 bit encryption keys?  Top
Because at Zettabyte Storage we care about more than just the impression of security. Many companies proudly list the 448-bit keylength of blowfish, state that it is larger than the 256-bit keys used in AES, and exclaim that blowfish has never been broken. While these statements are true, they are also completely meaningless. Neither Blowfish nor AES have ever been broken, and there is a lot more to encryption algorithms than the length of their keys.

When choosing between two encryption ciphers with equally spotless records, the best you can do is to look at how those records were generated. Simply put, no other encryption algorithm in the history of cryptography has received more scrutiny than the Rijndael cipher used in AES. It has been examined extensively by researchers around the world, and is certified by the NSA as suitable for the encryption of even those documents classified "TOP SECRET".

Ordering

How do I order Zettabits?  Top
On the Zettabits Datacenter, Zettabits Professional or Zettabits Home service plan pages, you will see a button called "Proceed to Checkout". Yes! We ship internationally to almost every country, except where prohibited by current United States trade or export laws. If you want to be sure that we ship to your country before you order, Contact Us to tell us where you are located, and we will let you know whether we are shipping to that country.

Don't forget to factor in the exchange rate between the U.S. and your country, and any fees that your credit card company may charge for the currency conversion.
Will I receive a bill from you each billing period for my service?  Top
Unless you choose the "Pay By Check" option during the checkout process, you will not receive a paper bill from us. We will notify you via email every billing period that you have a new charge from us. We will then automatically charge this amount to the credit card you provided when you first ordered the service.
What if I don't have a credit card, or I'd like to pursue an alternative payment method or schedule?  Top
If you'd rather receive a paper bill from us each billing period, you can select the "Pay By Check" option during the checkout process (currently limited to those located in the U.S. or Canada; credit application and check, or a prepayment period, required to establish account). If you'd like to work out another payment method or schedule, contact us at sales@zettabytestorage.com and we'll see what we can do.

Cancellation

When can I cancel my Zettabits service?  Top
You can cancel any time. If you cancel in the middle of the month, we will refund you the portion of the month remaining, unless you have a 6 month or 12 month contract term. You must return the zBox to us within 30 days of your cancellation date. Please refer to the Termination Section of the Service Agreement for details.
What happens to my stored data when I cancel Zettabits?  Top
Nothing immediately; you have ample time to transition all of your stored data from your zBox to any other computer on your network. Once we have received your returned zBox, all data on the remote archive will be deleted. Additionally, each zBox hard drive is overwritten with multiple passes before being put to any future use.
